Robben Island, Cape Town

holiday apartment cape town
This is an island of 5 square kilometers in Table Bay, situated some 7 kilometers off the coast of Cape Town. On any trip from your holiday apartment to the Waterfront area you’ll be able to see it. The name in Dutch means ‘seal island’ - evidently because it was thought to be fit only for seals. Later it became the residence of many ‘undesirables’.

The ceaseless and violent surf protecting Robben Island made it the perfect place for a prison colony. During the Apartheid era (1948-1994) the island imprisoned former South African President and Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela and former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, as well as many other political prisoners, for decades.

Today it is a World Heritage Site and houses the Robben Island Museum that recalls South Africa’s journey towards a new democracy and the price paid for freedom. To get there from your holiday apartment, make your way to Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. It takes a half hour to reach the island by ferry (departures at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm, weather permitting). The standard tour of 3.5 hours includes a visit to the infamous Maximum Security Prison.

Robben Island is one of those tourist venues that never fails to move you. As one of our holiday apartment guests recently said during her time in Cape Town “Visiting this prison and seeing its bleak surroundings is a humbling and educational experience.”
