Anybody who loves the ‘great outdoors’ will be totally amazed by the beauty that surrounds the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. It’s safe to say that there are hardly any visitors (often staying in a Cape Town hotel or apartment), who will pass up the opportunity to visit this place as part of their holiday - and with good reason!

Kirstenbosch boasts botanical gardens of world renown, set against the backdrop of Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak and home to over 22,000 indigenous plants. The site is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

How remarkable to consider that Kirstenbosch was established back in 1913 to protect the immense floral wealth of the Cape region. It’s a botanical wonderland, spanning over 1300 acres and providing visitors with plenty of paved paths for leisurely or energetic walking. You’ll return to your Cape Town holiday apartment tired but happy.

Hikers can choose one of two popular paths - the Skeleton Gorge and the Nursery Ravine, each of which wind their way up Table Mountain. For either one you’ll need to be fairly fit. Note that these hikes will take you the better part of a day.

Visiting the glass-topped conservatory is an experience in itself - one of the best in the Cape Town area. There are numerous plants - some very rare - from different South African habitats. Visit the Cycad Garden, take the Fynbos Walk and learn about medicinal plants in the Useful Plants Garden.

Refreshments are available at the Botanical Cafe outdoor coffee shop and the Silvertree Deli and Restaurant. There’s no need to bring picnics with you from your holiday apartment because Silvertree can organize picnic baskets. Also check out their open-air summer Sunday concerts.
